1987: A Visionary Proposal for Sustainable Nuclear Safety After Chernobyl
In October 1987, a few months after the Chernobyl accident, the French edition of Scientific American (Pour la Science, issue 120) published an article by Alain Elayi that proposed a clear and rational approach to radiological safety.Instead of treating all radioactive products uniformly after discharge, the author advocated managing them progressively as they are produced in the reactor core, according to their actual decay profiles. He highlighted the thorium-uranium fuel cycle as a particularly promising path to significantly reduce the inventory of very long-lived radioactive species.
